Year 1 and 2
Welcome to the exciting world of Year 1 and 2 at Orchard View!
In our mixed Year 1 and 2 class this year, we will go on journeys with adventurous characters in English, explore our local area in Geography, build functional structures in DT and develop our number knowledge, using a range of resources in Maths.
In the Summer Term, we immerse ourselves in nature by exploring our meadow in Forest School. This will help us to develop our skills in communication, problem solving and assessing risks around us. We love learning about the vast variety of plants and animals that call Orchard View their home.
We ensure that our Academy motto, ‘Together we learn, together we succeed’, is at the forefront of our approach to learning for all our pupils at Orchard View. The teachers and teaching assistants in Class 1/2 U work together in partnership, to ensure all children feel nurtured and inspired to carry the OVPA motto with them during their Primary journey and beyond.
It is important to us that we create a collaborative environment, whereby parents and carers are involved in their child’s learning, throughout their time at Orchard View.

Reading in Year 1 and 2
Reading is an essential skill that opens doors to every area of learning. Daily reading not only strengthens word recognition and fluency, but it also broadens vocabulary, sparks imagination and drastically improves writing.
Each week, your child will bring home a decodeable ELS reading book that is focused on the phonics sounds they have been learning that week.
Reading together at home is one of the most powerful ways to support your child’s progress. We ask that children read at home five times a week and that any reading – whether school books or your own at home – is recorded in their Reading Record. Where possible, please encourage your child to take responsibility for writing in their reading record at least twice a week, as this helps build their independence. Reading records should still be signed by an adult.
Below is our recommended reading list for pupils in Year 1 and Year 2. These are books that can be shared with your child at home to widen their reading experience:

Spellings in Y1/2
ELS Essential Spelling programme aids the important transition from phonics to spelling. Spellings are taught in conjunction with phonics, primarily for pupils in Y2. This consists of daily 40 minute lessons that offer quick challenges, that allow pupils to apply their knowledge of spelling rules. This gives the opportunity to unpick and teach the parts of words that can cause common spelling mistakes.
Phonics screening check
In June, Year 1 children participate in the statutory phonics screening check which assesses knowledge of grapheme-phoneme correspondence and their skills in blending.
Those children who do not meet the pass mark in the phonics screening check in Year 1 are highlighted for further intervention and targeted support, before completing the screening re-check in June of Year 2.
The phonics check is intended as a check of phonic decoding and it is not a wider check of your child's reading skills. Reading comprehension is a separate aspect and this is formally assessed at the end of KS1.
